Lab activities

• Personal meeting: A supervisor holds a face-to-face meeting with each member of the lab at the beginning of the fiscal year. In addition to this, you will be occasionally asked to attend a face-to-face meeting with your supervisor.
• Weekly seminar: Progress report (plus an introduction of relevant papers) by the lab members in turn.
• Weekly Reading circle: Read a text book in a relevant area in a group.

研究室の活動

当研究室では、以下のような活動をしています。

• 個別面談　年度の初めに指導教員が個別に面談をします。それ以外にも必要に応じて面談を設定します。
• ゼミ（週１回）　持ち回りで研究の進捗状況の報告する会です。あわせて、関連した文献の紹介をしてもらうこともあります。
• 輪講（週１回）　現在の研究に関連した分野の英語の教科書を、章ごとに分担しながら持ち回りで内容を紹介していきます。

Information for 3rd year undergraduate students

1. Lab assignment schedule

First of all, you need to be an undergraduate student at TTI. Usually, we advertise opportunities to join our lab as 4th year project member in the following schedule. We accept 5 or 6 students, depending on the total number of 4th year students.

• Nov.: Lab introduction (3-5 times in a month)
• Early Dec.: Deadline for an application
• Mid-Dec.: Decision of acceptance
• April: Start of 4th year projects

Acceptance (or rejection) will be determined based on the university rules, which means that when students more than the limit apply, the university decides who should be selected based on their specified priority and GPA scores.

2. Preferable skills

We presume that you have already taken courses/modules in the computer science area. On the top of that, it is important that you have a strong interest in natural language processing or artificial intelligence. It will be a gift if you are good at mathematical logic, statistics, and/or information theory as well as computer programming and English. However, please do not worry about it. We will give sufficient instructions if we find your lack of some essential knowledge. Of course, you need to work very hard to fill the gap. This is for sure.

3. Research topics

We decide your project theme based on a face-to-face meeting with new lab members. We enumerate several research topics when we advertise our lab in November. Basically, you will be assigned one of the topics. However, if you propose a really nice topic that fits our lab’s targeted areas and that is suitable for the 4th year project (in terms of difficultly and timeline), you might be allowed to proceed the topic.

4. Preparation

We recommend you read one or two text books in natural language processing before you join the lab.

卒業・課題研究生のための情報

１．配属スケジュール

例年、下記のようなスケジュールで配属希望者を募集します。 通常定員は４～６名です（その年度の学生数により変わります）。

• 10～11月 研究室説明会（指定の日時に計3～5回）
• 11月末 配属申込締切
• 12月中旬 配属決定
• ４月配属

配属は大学のルールによって決まりますので、 研究室の定員を超える希望があった場合は、希望者の指定した優先順位と成績によって配属を決定します。

２．望ましいスキル

情報系の単位を取っていることが大前提となります。 その上で、自然言語処理や人工知能に興味をもっていることが大切です。 前提知識として、論理学、確率・統計、情報理論といった基礎知識のいずれか（またはいくつか）を備え、 プログラミングと英語ができることが望ましいです。 とはいえ、不足している知識は、当研究室に配属後に勉強してもらいますので、 やる気が十分にあれば心配はいりません。

３．研究テーマ

研究テーマは、指導教員が学生と面談を行い、学生の能力や特性、希望を考慮して決定します。 卒業・課題研究のテーマの候補は、研究室の配属希望にあわせて、例年あらかじめ決めておきます。 ただし、もし当研究室の研究領域内で卒研に相応しい内容と難易度のテーマを提案し、 指導教員に認められれば、希望の研究テーマを担当することもあり得ます。

４．配属までの準備

配属までに、自然言語処理に関しては、「自然言語処理のための深層学習」を読んでおくとよい。

Information for prospective master course students

We accept 5 master course students, plus students authorized under the Double Degree agreements with other partner universities. If you are not TTI students, please contact me before you send your Master Course application form to TTI. The entrance exam is only in Japanese and there is no exam for foreign students. You need to have a good Japanese reading/writing skills, probably at the N1 or N2 level.

修士での配属希望者のための情報

当研究室の修士課程の枠は通常5名程度です。 外部からの修士受験者は、必ず受験申し込みの前（８月上旬頃）に面談に来てください。 修士で必要なスキルは上記２の通りです。本学の修士課程では情報以外の物性工学・機械システム分野の科目の単位も 取得しなければ修了できませんので、あらかじめ修士のカリキュラムも確認しておいてください。

We are seeking for a few Ph.D. course students. Successful candidates will be those who got (will get) a Master’s degree in NLP, AI, ML, or Program Theory. Please contact me if your are interested.

博士での配属希望者のための情報

当研究室では博士課程の学生を募集しています。学内外から 自然言語処理またはテキストマイニング、機械学習、プログラム理論に 関する分野の研究で修士取得者（または取得見込）の応募をお待ちしておりますので、 興味がある方は、一度面談に来てください。
